Slips, trips, and falls remain one of the leading causes of workplace injuries across nearly every industry. These incidents can occur in offices, warehouses, job sites, and outdoor work areas—often during routine tasks that seem low risk.

Common causes include wet or icy surfaces, uneven flooring, cluttered walkways, poor lighting, unsecured cords, and improper use of ladders or elevated platforms. OSHA’s walking-working surfaces and fall protection standards require employers to keep floors clean and dry, provide safe access to elevated areas, and use appropriate fall protection when working at height.

Prevention starts with awareness and housekeeping. Regular inspections help identify hazards such as spills, loose mats, damaged flooring, or obstructed pathways before incidents occur. Prompt cleanup, clear walkways, and adequate lighting significantly reduce exposure.

Footwear and behavior also matter. Employees should wear appropriate shoes for their environment and avoid distractions when walking. For tasks involving ladders or elevated surfaces, proper training and equipment—such as guardrails or personal fall arrest systems—are essential.

Slips, trips, and falls are often preventable when risks are recognized early. By reinforcing safe walking practices, maintaining work areas, and addressing hazards promptly, organizations can reduce injuries, support productivity, and create safer environments for everyone.
