What Drivers and Fleets Need to Know Before May 12–14

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck is scheduled for May 12–14, 2026, and fleets across North America should begin preparing now. This annual high-visibility inspection event places a strong focus on commercial motor vehicle safety, regulatory compliance, and driver readiness.

During the three-day initiative, inspectors will conduct roadside inspections on both drivers and vehicles to identify violations that may place operations at risk. Vehicles or drivers found with out-of-service violations may be restricted from operating until issues are corrected.

Driver Inspection Focus

For the driver portion of the inspection, enforcement personnel will review several key compliance areas, including:

  • Driver qualifications and licensing
  • Record of duty status
  • Medical examiner’s certificate
  • Seat belt usage
  • Skill performance evaluation certificate, if applicable
  • Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse status in the United States

Inspectors will also look for signs of alcohol or drug impairment. Drivers identified with out-of-service violations may be prohibited from operating their vehicle until the issue has been resolved.

Vehicle Inspection Focus

Vehicle inspections will evaluate critical safety components such as:

  • Brake systems
  • Cargo securement
  • Coupling devices
  • Driveline and driveshaft components
  • Fuel and exhaust systems
  • Frames and suspensions
  • Lighting devices
  • Steering mechanisms
  • Tires, wheels, rims, and hubs
  • Windshield wipers and driver seating

Passenger-carrying vehicles may also undergo additional review of emergency exits, seating, and electrical systems.

If inspectors identify out-of-service violations, the vehicle may be placed out of service and restricted from movement until repairs are completed.

Prepare Before the Inspection

International Roadcheck serves as an important reminder for fleets and drivers to review documentation, conduct pre-trip inspections, and address maintenance concerns proactively. Preparation helps reduce operational disruption and reinforces a strong culture of safety and compliance.
