Jul 14, 2025

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced July 13–19, 2025, as this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week—a coordinated enforcement and education initiative aimed at reducing unsafe driving behaviors across North America.

Law enforcement agencies in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will be on high alert for dangerous behaviors by commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers and passenger vehicle drivers. These include:

  • Speeding

  • Distracted or aggressive driving

  • Following too closely

  • Impaired driving

  • Non-compliance with federal regulations, including the English language proficiency requirement for CMV drivers operating in the U.S.

Focus: Reckless and Careless Driving

This year’s emphasis is on reckless, careless, or dangerous driving—defined as operating a vehicle with disregard for the safety of others or without due attention and care. These behaviors are a major contributor to roadway fatalities, with over 42,000 deaths reported in the U.S. in 2022, and thousands more across Canada and Mexico.

Regulatory Compliance Matters

In addition to monitoring driving behavior, officers will ensure that CMV drivers operating in the U.S. meet all federal requirements, including the ability to read and speak English. This requirement is essential for safety and enforcement communication, especially during inspections and emergencies. Violations may result in citations, fines, or drivers being placed out of service.

Education & Resources

Alongside enforcement, Operation Safe Driver Week promotes awareness through training materials, videos, and multilingual safety postcards available for free to CVSA members. These tools support safety education for commercial drivers and the public.

Operation Safe Driver Week is more than enforcement—it’s about saving lives. From reckless driving to regulatory compliance, every detail matters when it comes to safety on the road.
