eMaxx CEO Brian McCarthy Participates in 129th Boston Marathon Supporting the Thomas E. Smith Foundation

Apr 28, 2025

The 129th Boston Marathon, held on April 21, 2025, is one of the most iconic and prestigious long-distance races in the world, spanning 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston. This year, eMaxx CEO Brian McCarthy participated in the race, walking as a guide alongside Tom Smith, co-founder of the Thomas E. Smith Foundation, who lives with paralysis. Together, Brian McCarthy and Tom Smith helped raise over $140,000 to support the Foundation’s mission.

The Thomas E. Smith Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals affected by spinal cord injury (SCI) and paralysis. The foundation provides financial and emotional support, as well as promotes preventive innovations to reduce the risk of SCI.

Working with the Thomas E. Smith Foundation, Tom supported Journey Forward during this year’s Marathon. In his 7th Boston Marathon, Tom continued to raise awareness and funds for those living with spinal cord injuries. His dedication to supporting both Journey Forward and the Thomas E. Smith Foundation highlights his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others, while honoring the legacy of those affected by SCI.

Brian and Tom also completed the race with Bill Richard, the father of the youngest victim of the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing, 8 year-old Martin Richard. After seeing Brian and Tom at the Boston Marathon Expo on Saturday, April 19, 2025, Bill decided to join their team and walk in support on the Martin Richard Foundation.

The Martin Richard Foundation continues to honor Martin’s legacy by supporting the Boston area and helping young people learn, grow and lead. The foundation promotes sportsmanship, inclusion, kindness and peace, advancing these values in the community. In Martin’s honor, Martin’s Park, a playground overlooking Fort Point Channel in Boston, was built in 2019 as a lasting tribute. The Martin Richard Foundation has worked closely with the Thomas E. Smith Foundation on various innovative initiatives, establishing a lasting relationship between the two organizations to drive positive change moving forward.

Congratulations to Brian, Tom and Bill on the incredible feat of finishing the 129th Boston Marathon in 8 hours, 8 minutes and 30 seconds. Their determination, teamwork and commitment to the Thomas E. Smith Foundation, Journey Forward and the Martin Richard foundation made this achievement more meaningful.
