Extreme weather events pose significant risks for drivers. Here’s how to stay safe during tropical storms, tornadoes and wildfires.

Tropical Storms: Heavy rain and strong winds can lead to flooding and poor visibility. Avoid driving through flooded areas, as just a few inches of water can stall a vehicle or sweep it away. If you must drive, reduce speed, use headlights, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

Tornadoes: Tornadoes can develop quickly, making it crucial to stay informed via weather alerts. If you see a tornado or hear a warning, do not try to outrun it. Instead, find a sturdy building for shelter. If you are caught in your car, seek shelter in a low-lying area such as a ditch, covering your head to protect from debris.

Wildfires: Smoke and flames reduce visibility and air quality. Avoid driving in wildfire-prone areas. If you must evacuate, keep your windows closed, recirculate air in your car, and follow official evacuation routes to avoid closed or dangerous roads.

General Tips: Always have an emergency kit in your vehicle, including water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a first aid kit, and blankets. Stay informed about weather conditions and have a plan in place for each type of event.
