Peabody, MA – Energi, a Massachusetts based Industrial Reinsurance Company, worked with Habitat for Humanity on Wednesday, July 18, 2012, to incorporate volunteer work into the Energi Summer College Internship Program. Energi’s extensive internship program places an emphasis on giving back to the community.
Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that has facilitated the development and repair of over 500,000 decent, affordable homes. The international organization works locally in communities and organizes volunteers to build and repair houses for potential recipients. These future homeowners are required to work 400 hours on the job site to act as a down payment and are chosen based on their need for housing and ability to pay a mortgage. *
Energi’s College Interns volunteered as a team of eleven. Each intern was assigned a task which consisted of either, mixing cement, organizing dumpsters, sorting tools and supplies, painting, or cleaning the construction site. Jim Nentwig, Vice President of Corporate Projects, who oversees the intern program stated, “The Habitat for Humanity work experience stressed teamwork and unselfish giving. Meeting and working with the future homeowners was the high point of the day!”
The Interns were given the opportunity to see the Habitat for Humanity building process. On the site, there were three homes in different stages of development. Kyle Peterson, Loss Prevention and Safety Intern and Undergraduate Student at Keene State College said, “It was interesting to see the step by step process of what the houses go through when being built. We were able to get a better understanding of what goes into building a home and how much time and hard work volunteers put into them.”
Casey Byrne, Energi’s Claims Manager, organized the day and stated, “Energi places great value on giving back to the community in which we all work. I am so happy the interns were able to make a difference by volunteering their time to assist with such a meaningful project.”
